Addiction Counseling

Addiction can block you from being able to heal your mind. It can also derail, shorten, or even suddenly end your life. Addiction shows up in 50 percent of everyone who struggles with mind suffering.64 If you experience substantial anxiety, depression, mood fluctuations, or concentration difficulties, be careful not to let your sources of self-comfort get out of hand.

If addiction is part of your struggle, you must manage it before addressing any other causes of your distress. Dealing directly with an addiction is more important than knowing what caused it. If you don’t directly manage an addiction, it will take you over and cause its own problems. Because addiction assumes a life of its own, it must be taken seriously and addressed as a separate problem.

Addiction is the use of a substance or a behavior despite negative consequences arising from its use. If you have alcoholism, you’ll still feel compelled to drink even if you’ve lost your license, your job, or your home. If you’re a sex addict, you’ll still feel compelled to look for novelty sex even if it’s caused the loss of an important relationship or a job or if it’s given you an infection or resulted in legal difficulties.

Active addiction is a juggernaut. It stops for nothing. The more momentum it gains, the stronger it becomes. It’s like a parasite, taking over your will, your values, and your future. It can become more important than your job, your family, and even your life.

Because urges can become so intense and denial can become so strong, addiction can hijack your mind and your life. You can find yourself trapped in an endless loop of compelling urges. As soon as they are satisfied, addictive urges scream for more. The need to satisfy urges leads to lying, deception, rationalization, and minimization—all of which spin a web to entrap you. Because of denial, you try to ignore the seriousness of your addiction. Because of shame, your self-esteem is crushed and your wish for help can become a desperate whisper.

Many people don’t turn for help with addiction until a shocking event happens. This is called hitting bottom. Hitting bottom is often the only way to eliminate denial and motivate action to get help. It is often said that an addict is not ready for help until hitting bottom. A bottom could be as simple as people saying they are concerned about you. It could also be a serious loss of job relationships or health, or a shocking legal consequence.

If you think you are developing a problem with a substance or a behavior, there’s a good chance that you have or you will. Now is the time to address it. If you can’t stop it on your own, get some help.

Addiction counseling tends to be practical and directive. Although it’s helpful to know about your past, addiction counselors are more concerned with your present. They will want to know your pattern of use of addictive substances and behaviors and the problems they have created.
